Re: [MW:17530] Combined welding process qualification

GTAW Process is prefered for full peneteration weld,So as per our practice We Dont require to backgauge if root run is with GTAW,if you want to qualify welder for both the process then avoid backgauging.

If the GTAW weld is not part of Bend Test / Radiography, then GTAW welder has to be qualified separately.

SAW welding operator do not require separate qualification.

Subject: [MW:17520] Combined welding process qualification

Dear Expert,

Could you please give your opinion for following matter?

Combined welding process: GTAW + SAW
Test coupon: Single U
Plate thickness: 20 mm
GTAW - root pass and hot pass (approx. 4 or 5 mm)
SAW - filler pass and capping (approx. 16 mm)
Root to be back gouging and filled with SAW.

Question:
1. Does this welder / welding operator qualify to weld with GTAW and SAW? Root to be back gouging and filled with SAW.

2. Is separate qualification required to qualified this welder / welding operator for GTAW + SAW?
