Re: [MW:17217] IGC Practice A and E

Hi,

IGC Testing Practice A is Oxalic Acid Etch Test for Classification of Etch Structures of Austenitic Stainless Steels.

and

Practice E is Copper–Copper Sulfate–Sulfuric Acid Test for Detecting Susceptibility to Intergranular Attack in Austenitic Stainless Steels

So as indicated above, Practice A is rapid method of identifying, by simple etching, those specimens of certain stainless steel grades that are essentially free of susceptibility to intergranular attack associated with chromium carbide precipitates. As a result of this some specimens can be acceptabe and does not need further testing (B,C,E,F). Hence first this test is carried out for each material at first when Owner doesnot specify anything.

However in most cases owner specifies Practice E for Austenitic Stainless Steel.

Hope this helps.

Purav Desai.
