Re: [MW:17185] % RT Requirement for piping

Gents,

Normally initial production joints NDT are client requirement, such as Aramco, where first three production weld of new welders are radiographed. In Aramco, these initial production joints are not considered in NDT percentage coverage for line class requirements.

Dear Mr Raghuramji,

In the process of Welder qualification production joint radiography is very important step, welder must pass this test after we can mobilize the welder on the job and that production joint radiography accepted as per radiography acceptance criteria given in the Qw-191 which acceptance criteria is very different from  fluid service radiography acceptance criteria used for different fluids and very stringent also than fluid service acceptance criteria.we cant cover radiography percentage by radiography of joints accepted by different radiography acceptance criteria.
Even any code not states for to cover production joint radiography in radiography percentage so last decision depend upon client is the final desicion, and in case of repair found in joints there is no limit of radiography percentage.

Dear Mr. Chauhan

With due respect, i disagree with your statement. no where EIL std does state this requirement (i.e first two joints would not be part of % covered in a system)

i just give you an example. in a typical project in India, where skilled welders are abundant and attrition ratio is very high, we are ending up qualifying over 400 welders vs 100 of actual requirement. imagine aprx 800 joints radio-graphed as production welds, yet these are not covered in %?

and as far Mr Savad's query is concerned if he start adding 10 welds per welder, he may end up doing 20% RT, where 10% is required actually, remember the schedules are squeezing day by day for new projects, gone are the days where RT work used to be a night activity. It's  nightmare for the the project manger, including client's.

As per EIL specification,
After satisfactory WQT of welder, before we mobilize the welder on the job radiography of first 2.nos production joint should be taken for pipe dia above 6" and one production joint should be taken for pipe dia below 6",and that radiographed production joints must not be covered in the radiography percentage required for that particular pipe class.if any repair found in production joint radiography 2.nos penalty joints should be taken seperately on the job by that particular production joint.

Dear sir
Generaly in piping, 1st 2joints shall be radiographed per welder and
then percentage shall be covered ( if  you refer any EIL
specifications) as per client specifications, we did same thing in
HPCL- vizag  and cochin , BPCIL karur.
