Dear Sri Pandithan,

The higher hardness in the HAZ is as a result of very high heat input
during welding. The extent of hardness depends on the chemistry(Ceq.),
preheat & thickness of the base metals joined. This is applicable for
steels which have tendency for transformation at different
temperatures. Depending upon the temperature reached and subsequent
cooling rate in the HAZ, the transformed products viz., martensite,
bainite or ferrite and Carbides are obtained and the corresponding
hardness is attained.

In case of Austenitic stainless steels, the structure remains as
austenitic at room temperature as well as higher temperatures.
Therefore, the welding heat does not affect the hardness much but
there will be some minor precipitation at the grain boundaries.

Dear Hrushikesh,

It is due to the distortion of grain structure occurred during welding
in the HAZ area due to heat transfer from the molten weld metal to the
base metal.

Piping systems involved for the flow lines and gathering lines from the well head isolation valve to the production facility or processing plant isolation valve are determined as OFF PLOT. ON PLOT defines piping system in the processing plant and production platform. ANSI/ASME B31.4 applies for off plot piping system. B31.4 allows the use of either API 1104 or ASME section IX (as appropriate). However, occasionally, a very small system such as piping within 500 feet of a processing plant (some client also said 400 feet) may be declared B31.3 rather than B31.4.
