“SA” is not an acronym.  It is just a designation given to the ferrous material specifications adopted by ASME to distinguish it from material specifications from other organizations.  There are also ASME “SB” specifications and they are for the nonferrous material specifications.  

 

The ASME SA- specifications are in ASME Section II, Part A and the ASME SB- specifications are in ASME Section II, Part B.  The latest edition is the 2013 edition.
