There are a few differences in PWHT requirement in these two codes which mostly are due to different operation conditions and stress distribution in pipe comparing to a vessel. The most famous difference is the minimum thickness which PWHT becomes mandatory. For but welds in B31.3 piping (CS) it is 19 mm and for Sec VIII pressure vessel, it is 25mm.
