Maybe you are referring to the low carbon versions of 304 and 316 (304L and 316L) which have reduced carbon. With this low carbon comes a reduction in the risk of intergranular corrosion in the weld heat affected zone. With the standard grades this corrosion is caused by the carbon combining with the chromium to form chromium carbide, removing the chromium which would otherwise be available to form chromium oxide on the surface of the stainless steel. Stainless steel is only stainless because of the chromium oxide layer on the surface.
