[MW:13378] RE: 13363] Regarding Deletion of welding Process.

Hi

// Can I use only SMAW process for Fillet welding In structural or Only GTAW
process can be used.//

For structural welding, if you are using AWS D1.1, then you cannot use this
WPS.
If you are using ASME Sec IX, you can delete any process and weld with
either GTAW or SMAW for fillet welds (without open groove).

Please note that Joint design is a non essential variable for WPS (ref QW
253 and QW 256). However it is an Essential Variable for Welder
qualification (Deletion of Backing). Ref QW 356 and QW 353. So, here, for
SMAW process, either the weld metal or the base metal can be considered as
backing.

But, however , in addition to Code requirements, the Client specifications
shall be honored and followed. Some clients does not allow this process
deletion in their spec.

Subject: [MW:13363] Regarding Deletion of welding Process.

Dear ALLExperts,

I badly need your help for Deletion welding Process
for Using fillet welding Structural.

I have Qualified W.P.S (GTAW-root/hot+SMAW -fill/
cap)for Piping welding as per SEC-IX
& its qualified for fillet in all dia/size/ thickness
& diameter as per SEC-IX.
Can I use only SMAW process for Fillet welding In
structural or Only GTAW process can be used.

Or I have to Use both GTAW+SMAW process.

Kindly Enlighten me regarding this matter or any code
clause I have to follow ( ASME-B31.3 & Shell DEP Standard.)

Thanks & Regards

Madhusudan Rout.
