RE: [MW:13562] REGARDING PWHT of STORAGE TANK CLEAN OUT DOOR.

Dear Manoj,

Pls. check 5.7.4.2 of API 650 to ascertain whether you require PWHT or not?

However you can use the same PQR , no need for new PQR. Refer QW 407.2 of Section IX

i.e you can reduce the actual PWHT time but not to increase the PWHT time more than 120 %.

e.g

PQR, PWHT soak time 60 minutes                             -              Actual PWHT soak time at job can be 72 minutes or less

PQR PWHT soak time 180 minutes                            -              Actual PWHT at job can be 216 minutes or  less

QW-407.2 A change in the postweld heat treatment

(see QW-407.1) temperature and time range

The procedure qualification test shall be subjected to

PWHT essentially equivalent to that encountered in the

fabrication of production welds, including at least 80% of

the aggregate times at temperature(s). The PWHT total

time(s) at temperature(s) may be applied in one heating

cycle.

Cheers

MM

Subject: [MW:13536] REGARDING PWHT of STORAGE TANK CLEAN OUT DOOR.

Dear All,

I intended to use the following  WPS  for  storage tank clean out door welding :

Test coupon thickness  -   40 mm.

Material                       -   SA 516 Gr 70

Welding process          -   SMAW.

Electrode                    -    E 7018-1

PWHT  Temperature     -   620 - 650 degree centigrade.

Soaking time               -   180 minutes.

Rate of heating            -   130 Degree centigrade.

Rate of heating            -   130 Degree centigrade.

Storage tank detail:

Shell thickness              - 18 mm

Annular plate thickness  -  20 mm

Clean out door neck       -  18 mm

Clean out door flange      -  20 mm

Material                         -  SA 516 Gr 70

Welding process            -   SMAW

Electrode                       -   E 7018 -1

Stress relieving temp      -   620 - 650 degree centigrade.

Soaking time                 -   60 minutes.

Rate of heating              -   150 - 200 Degree centigrade.

Rate of heating              -   150 - 200 Degree centigrade

My doubt is whether the soaking time in the PQR is acceptable or I have to qualify another WPS.

Thanks in advance.

Manoj
