Hi,
The interpass temperature should be realistically measured and shall be uniform on the weld deposit and at least an inch away from the weld bead/joint.
Usually this requires be monitored and measured just before the start of the next pass. For critical welds take readings after depositing every pass. The methods could be thermal crayon or digital thermometers. Some welds may be intolerant to crayons; digital thermometer is a good option in those cases.
The attached article explains the importance of interpass temperature.

Subject: [MW:4288] Interpass temperature
As per ASME sec 9 definition interpass temperature is the temperature measured just before the start of next pass. So where is it to be measured? On the weld pass before start of the next pass. But this is very impracticable.
Can anyone suggest?
