[MW:2963] Re: nitrogen

Dear Mr.Kannan,

TIG welding is usually performed with pure argon as

The shielding gas.

But, Resistance to  pitting

Corrosion can be considerably raised by the addition of

Up to 2% nitrogen. However, because the risk of pores

Increases with increased nitrogen %

Thanks & Regards,

Hi,
I could see in a client spec. insisting the use of 98% Ar and 2% Nitrogen gas mixture for backing and shielding of duplex steel welding.
What could be the significance of using 2% Nitrogen?
How it is technically advantageous over use of single argon gas?
Thanks and Regards,
