Re: [MW:32212] PWHT thickness ranges of Carbon steel materials as per ASME B 31.3 latest

A major significant change in welding requirements for process piping was brought out by ASME B31.3 (2014), Table 331.1.3 "Exemptions to Mandatory Postweld Heat Treatment" which allowed for:
  • all P-No.1 carbon steels,  
  • all control Thickness, 
  • all weld types,
to be exempted from PWHT if a preheat of 95°C (200°F) is applied prior to welding on any nominal material thickness > 25mm (1in). Note that for materials thickness of below 5 mm (3/16 in), multiple layer welds shall be used; otherwise, this exemption cannot be applied.

But keep in mind that there are a lot of arguments and discussions about this new rule...
Many see it as a bad idea (me included)...
