[MW:4414] RE: 4412] WPS

Irrespective of the requirement (whether PWHT is for process or
thickness) it is necessary to qualify separate PQR for with PWHT or
without PWHT.

Subject: [MW:4412] WPS

Dear all ,

If we qualify the welding procedure for the P1 materials with post weld
heat treatment then whether it is applicable for the welding without
post weld heat treatment , Please note that here thickness is not the
criteria .Post weld heat treatment is required for some of the process
line in Refinery.
Please clarify.

Dear All

can anyone clarify whether PWHT is a code requirement or design requirement, because I have seen requirement of PWHT only in some codes like ASME B31.3 and 31.4 based on pipe thickness.

What is the actual criteria for including PWHT in a WPS.

PWHT IS required by thickness as per code. for e.g. in B31.3 above 20mm and Sec VIII div1 it is above 38mm in thickness for Carbon steel (P#1 material)

However PWHT also required due to process reasons, when corrosive fluids are involved, like Wet H2S, H2, Caustic, Amine etc. which is to defined by process designer based on operating conditions.
