Hi Prem,
When you detect a defect by UT, you need to confirm this by RT as it is without doing the grinding. You proceed with grinding or gouging to weld repair only after UT & RT confirmed the existence of defect. Gouge or grind until the defect is removed. An experienced welder or grinder would know during gouging or grinding that he is able to remove the defect.
Next is to perform the welding repair, and then after weld repair, check again by UT and RT to confirm that the defect in the area has been repaired properly. If not, then you repeat the procedure.
Good luck.

Hi Prem, After repair you are supposed to perform the same NDT method first (here UT will tell you the depth etc more correctly than RT can, if the slag is not removed effectively. If it is removed and the repair is effective, that also, will be revelaed by UT) and then you should go for an additional NDT method as a counter check. Any other comments are welcome.
