[MW:1709] Re: 1707] Impact test requirement of Nozzle to shell & Nozzle neck to flange welding

Hi Mr.Bathula,
From this question i understand that both SA333 Gr.6  (Nozzle neck) &  SA350 Gr. LF2 Cl2 (Flange) which comes under curve B as per UCS 66 which requires imact testting at -30deg C & 10mm thk. combination.
Can u clarify on what basis this joint is exempted ?

UCS 66 (a) (1) (d) to be followed for governing thickness, in this case governing thickness will be 10mm ( see fig L-9.3.1), hence Impact testing of material is exempted for this (neck to shell) and also for neck to flange weld.

However impact testing of shell material is required for other welds such as circumferential or long seams, In this case PQR with CVN impact is required when either base metal is required to be impact tested as per UCS-67(a)(1)

Shell to nozzle neck weld - Is it required Impact tested WPS/PQR?

YES
Nozzle neck to flange weld - Is it required Impact tested WPS/PQR?

NO

Subject: [MW:1707] Impact test requirement of Nozzle to shell & Nozzle neck to flange welding

Hi friends,

Please help me in following matter.

I need a clarification regarding the impact test requirement for Nozzle weld.

Material - SA 516 Gr.70 Normalised (Shell)

               SA333 Gr.6  (Nozzle neck)

               SA350 Gr. LF2 Cl2 (Flange)

Shell thickness - 80 mm

Nozzle thickness - 10 mm

MDMT- minus 30 deg.c

Code : ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1

Shell to nozzle neck weld - Is it required Impact tested WPS/PQR ?
Nozzle neck to flange weld - Is it required Impact tested WPS/PQR ?

As per UCS 66 (1) d. The weded asembly more than 2 component, the individual component thickness and MDMT to be checked. In this case the thickness of groove is higher than nozzle neck. What thickness to be considered?.

UCS 66 (1) d. refers the sketches in Sec. VIII to decide minimum thk. it makes confusion.

Thanks & Regards
