Code B31.3 never says regarding this seam to seam minimum distance requirement. I am working in shell project , shell specification says min 1t or 40mm which ever is high. but some cases in actual job seam to seam are in line, but field engg is accept the deviation. Actually due to welding there is residual stress , so if we join seam to seam in line , during circular seam welding , residual stress is more that area, So some of the client spec ask us to avoid this,., other wise not major problem. U r correct! I also couldn't find it anywhere in B31.3. We are also facing the same problem in our project for IOCL Haldia. Code is silent about it. In this case, the best way is to do additional NDT and hardness on these joints. especially hardness on the HAZ of joints to ensure that no hardening of HAZ occured. Regards Mukesh

I heard it shall be 5t or min 300mm for the size of a pup piece. No where in the ASME B 31.3 I could see it mentioned. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you, Regards, Sabir
