[MW:1187] Re: 1177] Radiography of tube to tubesheet welds

In ceratin conditions Tube are attached to tube sheet by Butt weld configuration. (Eg when coke formation is anticipated, thermal gradient requirements demand  etc.)
In such cases TTP joint is examined by UT. The  butt weld is a radiographable theoretically  but in practice RT is not feasible due to presence of  cluster of  joints. UT is the NDE demaded for such joints. Internal bore welding machines are used for such welds.

Dear Mr. Raghuram,

I have never heard or seen RT of TTS [Tube to Tubesheet joints]. TTS welds
are normally checked by Penetrant testing, Pneumatic testing and complete
penetration [during mock up tests].

I too would like to know if RT of TTS is carried out and how its done.

Thanks and regards,

Jignesh

Can anybody has experience with performance of RT on tube to tubesheet
welds, please share details for both techniques (i.e. back radiation and
forward radiation), equipment literature if any for this type RT.
