Re: [MW:30601] Filler Wire Selection For SA240 TYP 304/404L Plate For pressure Vessel Welding requirement Ferrite No.- 3-5 FN

A7-Ferrite in weld.  , that is not mandatory. this is only  informative

Pl ref ASME Sec 8, Div-1,  UHA- 6, Condition of Service & UHA-42, Weld metal composition.

Ramesh, please throw some light on this subject.

we all know LNG tanks are constructed of 9% Nickel steel taking into consideration the cost benefits. But it also depends on the Size, Thickness, PWHT possibility, Application and other factors taken into consideration by Materials Engineer

# Just asking

Why the LNG fuel tank (Cryogenic service) design considered as per ASME instead of API 620 !

Ferrite in weld deposits is not essential as per code. when required by client, Only the manufacturer can give compliance letter to suit your requirements.

as example, screen shot from SFA 5.9

it will be very difficult to achieve your required ferrite in this material and std filler. Ask manufacturer for your requirement.

1. Check with the Welding consumable  manufacturer whether they produce ER308L with your Ferrite requirement.
2. Check for ER308 consumable, as your service condition being low temperature application, by proper welding condition sensitization could be avoided and higher carbon produces a more austenitic structure.

If the above 2 conditions do not work then you can try other alternative.

Dear Experts

To obtain  Ferrite No. 3-5 FN After Welding of SA 240 TYP 304/304L Plate material which filler wire shall be used keeping below requirement under consideration :-

Mechanical Requirement :- As per ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code.

Additional mechanical requirement Impact @ -196 degree celsius :-  minimum Lateral Expansion 0.38 mm.

Welding Process : GTAW/SAW.

Service Type :- Cryogenic Service ( LNG Fuel Tank).

Approximate Job Dimension ;- THK 12 mm DIA. 5 meter Length - 30 meter.

Home Work Done :- I wish to do PQR With ER 310  Wire  ( Cost Approx INR  550 Rs/Kg ).
OR With ER 320 ( BUT here I have doubt that may Be ferrite obtained after welding Varies from 0-3 FN. Cost is also a constraint Approx INR 3000 Rs/Kg).

Kindly Guide if any other filler wire is available  & work done in past to obtain fulfill above requirement.

Regards
Atul Jha.
