Received clarification from the client about using E316L to weld Carbon steel.
Their welders are qualified to weld steel (P1 to P15) with filler material (F1 to F4).
They want these welder to be qualified for F No. 5 but do not have austenitic steel base metal in stock. Only Carbon steel is available in stock.
Therefore, they have requested a PQR to weld Carbon steel base metal P No 1 with E316L and ER 316L (F5 and F6).
In case the coupon meets ASME Section IX Nondestructive and destructive testing requirements, they will prepare a WPS which shall be used only to qualify welders for F number.
On another note, I hope to receive guidance on selection of filler materials in general.
What are the parameters to be considered to select filler materials for any base metal and whether it is addressed by general standards in the industry.
