[MW:27922] Re: Non Standard Blind Flange (Fabricated from Plate)

SPACER & BLIND Thickness Calculation for Internal Pressure (ASME B 31.3)

SPACER & BLIND  Thickness Calculation  for Internal Pressure (ASME B 31.3)
******************************************************************

Step1: Select the Spacer & Blind Material
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step2: List Down

      Ø  Pipe Outside Diameter, (mm) = D
   Ø  Internal Design Pressure,(Kg/cm²) = P
   Ø  Design Temperature, (C°) = T

For the material under consideration.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 3: List down

Ø  Allowable Stress, (Kg/cm²)  = S

ASME B 31.3 @ Design Temperature.  (TABLE A-1)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 4: Select

Ø  Joint Efficiency factor = E             (TABLE A-1A)

ASME B 31.3  (TABLE-1A)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 5: Select

Ø  Corrosion Allowance, (mm) = c
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 6: Formula @ ASME B 31.3

                                 3*P
tm   =    dg * √  (--------------)     +  c
                              16*S*E

tm= Calculated thickness including corrosion Allowance, (mm).
dg = Inside Dia. of gasket for RF/FF flanges or gasket pitch dia. for RTJ flanges, (mm).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 7: Compare thickness

If      t > tm

t = Thickness as per API 590

Then selected thickness of Spacer & Blind is OK,
Else revise the thickness.

Re: [MW:27915] PWHT in Sulphur Storage Tanks

Dear Friend
Sulphur iscorrosive element form Sulphides to reduce the intensity of corrosion one must control its hardness below 185BHN or say as per NACE
Therefore for NACE  application PWHT is essential Most of the time SA516 Gr 60 is recomended for CS eqpt

Re: [MW:27915] Dish end heat treatment.

Hi !
anyType of  Heat treatment on D/E after forming depends upon
i) Its Fibre elongation If it is >5% it it is asked by Code or Client spec Generally some code ask for Normalising or Stress relieving
ii) Some timeto control Hardness as per NACE it is recommended to go for PWHT

Therefore it is imporatant to satisfy code/spec requirement

(Heat treatment of formed D/E is not harmful even if it is not addressed in spec  but one must ensure that its mechanical properties are not deteriorated  )

Re: [MW:27915] Impact requirement for pressure vessel plates

Not required. Impact test requirement is a function of Temperature and Thickness. Refer Table UCS-66 Curve D values for Normalised material. Moreover Weld Metal is also exempted from Impact tests if welding consumable is impacted tested at MDMT upto -46degC

Re: [MW:27914] Permissible dent on pipe

Dear Anoj,

You will not find the straight answer for this question.
First you have to visually check the size (depth, length, width), sharpness and if the shape of the pipe has been changed. Based on these observations you can decide if further investigation has to be done like measurement of thickness reduction, NDT to find if any surface and/or internal defects are developed. If above tests, measurements, shape are acceptable, pipe can be used.

Thanks,
Warm Regards,

[MW:27907] UT area of concern items

Dear All.

a)Would you clear and explain these two paragraphs:

1.Measurements of beam spread for scan indexing limits shall be taken only when required by a referencing code section. Beam spread angles shall be measured once for a search unit wedge combination in the calculated far field at the beginning of each period of extended use, or every 3 months, whichever is less.(what is scan indexing limits and when is it used and how can be specified and based on which standard?)

2.Alternative methods of distance-amplitude of correction of sensitivity may be used provided the results are as reliable as those obtained by the acceptable method. In addition, the alternative method and its equipment shall meet all the performance requirements of this standard.(which alternative method of sensitivity calibration and in which standard are explained except as AWS D1.1)

b)and why mode conversion is more important and higher probable to happen for Probe 60 degree especially for corner square speciemen?
c) when the mode conversion in practical cases you have experienced mode conversion and get false indications and how find?

Regards.

[MW:27906] Impact requirement for pressure vessel plates

Dear All,
Vessel Data,
MDMT = ( - 30 Deg C),
Plate thickness = 12mm,
Dished end = 12/14,
Material = SA 516 Gr.70 N.+ HIC
Design Code - ASME Sec VIII DIV 1.

Is Impact testing required ?
As per UG-20 (f) (3) ,
"Design temperature is no warmer than 650°F (345°C) nor colder than −20°F (−29°C). Occasional operating temperatures colder than −20°F (−29°C) are acceptable when due to lower seasonal atmospheric temperature."

Is there any provision for wave Impact testing as per code provision(s). Kindly advise.

Re: [MW:27901] TANK BOTTOM PLATE REPAIR - REG

Dear Experts,

My query is whether a puncture in the bottom plate can be covered with patch plate. In API 653 it clearly says in the critical zone the minimum thickness shall be 0.1inch for placing the patch plate. But for the bottom plate other than the critical zone it is not clearly stated as of my knowledge. I requesting the team members if anybody carried out such type of repair work please share the details with code reference.

With Regards,
N.Shanmugam

Hi ,

You need to replace the full bottom plate in order to avoid the further breakdown during service.

By following API 653 is it possible to repair with patch plate on the holes formed and went through the entire bottom plate thickness by pitting corrosion. Your kind suggestion is requested.
Tank Construction code: API -650
Bottom plate thickness - 8mm

Re: [MW:27901] TANK BOTTOM PLATE REPAIR - REG

Hi,

as you mentioned during shutdown if the tank is urgent to close then we can proceed with patch repair (patch size to be decide based on inspection advise) to avoid long duration consuming such replacement and hydrotest with end user approval. However after some of duration the entire bottom plate along with tank pad to be replaced.

All in based on end user approval.

Best Regards,

Ponraj Sivathanu,
