Re: [MW:10066] Difference between impact testing by ASTME23 and ASTM A370

Dear Mr. Vikas,

A 370 and E 23 both are standard test method for notched bar impact testing of metallic material.

However, there are some basic differences.

A 370 is limited to Charpy V notch impact test specimen. (single Beam)

E 23 covers Charpy (single beam) and Izod ( Cantilever beam) test. Further, Impact testing machine as per A 370 is required to be calibrated as per E 23 ( Direct and/or Indirect methods)

Coming back to your query, just check up is it Charpy test (single beam) or Izod test(cantilever)  as per E 23 ?

Product forms certified as per ASME calls for impact testing as per SA 370. ASME Section IX requires impact testing of material as per SA 370 only.

Also refer your code of construction and applicable customer's specification in order to conclude further.

[MW:10058] Difference between impact testing by ASTME23 and ASTM A370

Dear all,

I have a procedure in which impact testing should have been done as per  ASTM A370 but it has been done as per ASTM E23

Is there any difference between the standard on how the impact tests are conducted? Would the difference effect the final values?
tha material was UNS 31803 pipe and was tested at minus 50 degree centigrade.

Thanks
