in my opinion type 3 will used only when there is no RT, else all these welds shall be considered as type 1 only, in particular if you read the description for type 1 under table UW12butt joints attained by double welding or by other means which will obtain the same quality on both sides.When welded from one side only in type 1 , it must be demonstrated that the quality of the deposited weld metal on both sides of the joint meet the requirements of UW-35.else you may refer flow chart in fig L-1.4.4. and select your joint efficiency

I have attached a schematic for illustration of various joints, for all the forum members. As per Table-UW-12, the joint in question is Type-3, which is single sided butt welds, without backing strips. This kind joint is permitted for type- A (L-Seam), B (Circ-Seam) , Type-C(Mainly Flange Joints).The limitations are specified in Table –UW-12
As per UW-12, the minimum efficiency for this type of weld permitted and required for code design is 0.60. One may perform RT over the code requirements but that is optional. From the description it's is Type –B weld on pipe , with the RT criteria specified in UW-11(a) (2).
Hence all stand points you may consider this joint as efficiency =.0.60.

Its simple Pipe to pipe joint single butt weld joint ( 4 to 8" Sch 10 pipes) .But considering the thickness & diameter its lying in Type 3.
Can we consider Type 1, but its for double weld butt joints?
