When welded from one side only in type 1 , it must be demonstrated that the quality of the deposited weld metal on both sides of the joint meet the requirements of UW-35.

else you may refer flow chart in fig L-1.4.4. and select your joint efficiency

Hi Pradeep
Thanks a lot for your detailed explanation & I got the point also.
But in my current project, I had designed the pipes with Joint efficiency of 0.6 as Type B weld. After wards, due to material change, the provided thickness is coming slightly lesser than the required one & we want to maintain same schedule of pipes.
That's why We are thinking to have radiography.

What's your opinion on this?

Thanks
Praphulla

Dear Praphulla,

I have attached a schematic for illustration of various joints, for all the forum members. As per Table-UW-12, the joint in question is Type-3, which is single sided butt welds, without backing strips. This kind joint is permitted for type- A (L-Seam), B (Circ-Seam) , Type-C(Mainly Flange Joints). The limitations are specified in Table –UW-12

As per UW-12, the minimum efficiency for this type of weld permitted and required for code design is 0.60. One may perform RT over the code requirements but that is optional. From the description it's is Type –B weld on pipe , with the RT criteria specified in UW-11(a) (2).

Hence all stand points you may consider this joint as efficiency =.0.60.

Thanks

I suppose this will be welded by GTAW process to obtain full penetration weld (which will give same quality of weld metal both sides) hence can be considered under type 1.

Even I would like to know which type of joint falls under type 3 (in my opinion only those circumferential welds which don't require full penetration), anybody give example?

Hi Bathula

Its simple Pipe to pipe joint single butt weld joint ( 4 to 8" Sch 10 pipes) .But considering the thickness & diameter its lying in Type 3.

Can we consider Type 1, but its for double weld butt joints?

Thanks

Praphulla

What type of joint it is, if it is to be radiographed, why not consider under type 1 of table UW12

Hi All

As per ASME SEC VIII Div I, in Table UW-12 , for type No 3 weld joints, 0.7 joint efficiency is specified without any radiographic examination.

But If I performed radiography examination, then what joint efficiencies values I should consider for Full & Spot radiography? As per code & Table UW-12, its NA.

Please guide me.
