[MW:2752] Re: 2729] Ferrite Number (FN) for the deposited weld metal

John
Is ferrite number also aplied for plain carbon steel weldability?
Thanks

Attached is a portion of a very old booklet provided by Stoody Corporation.  The information is very basic but it is the one place I could quickly put my hands on a comparison of Ferrite Number and % Ferrite (volume %).  Look at the Delong diagram and you can see the lines expressed as both ferrite number and % ferrite.

Any standard welding text book that discusses welding of austenitic stainless steels should have a discussion on ferrite, effects (both good and bad), and how to measure or estimate ferrite.  Estimating ferrite can be done with Sheffler Diagram (oldest), Delong Diagran (modified Sheffler), and WRC ferrite diagram (currently in vogue).  If you can get your hands on it, there is a good discussion of welding of stainless steels in the AWS Welding Handbook, Volume 4, Materials and Applications Part 2.  As the AWS Handbook is copyright material, I do not feel confortable copying it and sending out.

Please review the above and if you have specific questions please ask.

Subject: [MW:2729] Ferrite Number (FN) for the deposited weld metal

Dear All,

Regarding above mentioned subject, i would like to know in detail about ferrite number. I have a few questions to ask such as What is the ferrite number? Why it is so important? Materials subjected to ferrite number? Permissible limit of ferrite number? Code and standard that we refer to requirement of ferrite number? Procedure to perform ferrite number?..If anybody have experience or information regarding this subject hopefully you can share with me. Thank in advance for your kind cooperation
