below is my view;
the socket weld are easier to be installed.
yes, you can use a butt weld for small bore piping. This has been proven successfully in our project.
Lastly, some disadvantage such as overstress, fatigue and others disadvantage most likely happens in SW. Other thing also is BW strength is better than FW.
