Re: [MW:25862] PWHT reqmt for welds as per API 6D

If you do any repair welding on the plate itself - material spec will apply. In your case for 516 G70 - see ASTM A20 for PWHT requirements.

For PWHT on Weld joint obviously the design code apples. in your case it is Sec VIII Div.1

Regardless codes, your odds to succeed are minimal if you don not perform PWHT.

It is indeed mandatory for Pwht as per ucs 56 of sec viii div 1 for thk above 38 mm,& you should have pqr qualified with Pwht.

Dear Experts,
I have a Groove weld joint of thickness 40mm. The standard i need to follow is API 6D..
Welding procedures qualified under ASME sec.IX without PWHT with a test coupon of 50mm thickness of material ASTM A516 gr.70..
API 6D states " PWHT shall be performed in accordance with the applicable material specification or design code"
My material specification is ASTM A516 gr. 70 and Design code is ASME Sec.VIII Div. 1
A516 standard doesnt states welding or PWHT requirement, whereas ASME sec.VIII states - thickness above 38mm PWHT is mandatory..
Can i take the material specification to justify for not performing PWHT..
Please advise
With regards and thanks
Vadivel M
