RE: [MW:25957] Fillet size a6 with single layer (GMAW welding process)

Hello Vijay,

To answer to your query in a straight forward language:-

  • Depositing a fillet weld of 6 mm throat by GMAW process in a single pass is difficult. 6mm of throat = 9 mm of leg length, which is difficult to cover in one pass, unless the welder does edge to edge weaving.
  • Extended weaving would cause  loss of  travel speed and  production time.
  • Also it would induce undue defects e.g. toe undercuts. If so, one has to spend more time on grinding and subsequent dress ups, a redundant exercise.
  • Also if the materials have notch toughness or corrosion resistance requirements ( for austenitic or other stainless steels) , it may be compromised by a single pass technique.
  • Hence the so called gain of production time would mean nothing.

The parameters suggested by you are fine, if you perform a multi pass techniques. Or else you may try the welding parameters suggested by Mr Kannayeram Gnanapandithan, however the welder has to be comfortable. If the fillet weld involves any more welding positions other that 1F, 1.2 mm dia filler is more flexible to weld with.

Thanks.

Use 1.6mm, amp around 355

Dear Experts,

Our customer is forcing us to do multilayer welding for 6mm throat size, which is increasing our welding time because most of welding is in a6 size.

I have tried so many test coupon to prove that a6 can be done by single layer but I am not succeed in all test.

Customer requirement is root penetration at least 0.3 mm. But I am not able to achieve it. refer following parameters which I have used.

  • Welding process :- GMAW
  • Filler Wire :- ER 70 S6 (1.2 mm dia)
  • Shielding gas :- 80 % Argon + 20 % Co2
  • Current :- 245-255 Amp
  • Voltage :- 26.5 to 27.5
  • Travel speed :- 220 - 240 mm/min

Please advise any modification is required in the parameters.

Should I change Shielding gas composition?

Waiting for your valuable reply?

Thank you
