Hi – when it comes to minimum, as per code some are refereeing to one thread, some are two thread, and some are three thread…

But your question is very tricky…

 

Understand the concept, bolts are intended to keep hold the parts together and as pet that No of threads in engagement will be decided and confirmed by the designer as per standard…

 

To ensure that all the threads are in engage – evidence of the engagement is that minimum one or two threads has to out from the nut.

 

But maximum is as per your convenience and application and situation…

 

If more threads comes out (Means stud length more),

It might get interfere with other equipment and place constrain is an issue.

Or else might be difficult to place the stud as the stud length is more.

Or threads may get rusted, and will difficult while removing the nut for a lengthy stud portions..

Or stud cost will be more…

Or operation & maintenance cost will be more (u have to prevent from rusting the stud threads, and applying compound for it regularly when it comes to sea environment and all)

Or more time for tightening and loosening (during break down  time)

 

Like as so many other parameters will influence the situation…

There is no code defining for maximum length of threads come out from the nut…

As an engineer we should decide accordingly…
