[MW:4528] RE: 4526] Repair on casting

No - you are incorrect with regard to qualification for a partial penetration weld.

Please note ASME Sc. IX, QW-202.2 (b) which reads as follows:
"Qualification for partial penetration groove welds.

Partial penetration groove welds shall be qualified in accordance with the requirements of QW-451 for both base metal and and deposited weld metal thickness, except there need be no upper limit on the base metal thickness provided qualification was made on base metal having a thickness of 1-1/2 in. (38mm) or more."
So indeed, your vendors WPS is properly qualified with regard to thickness to make a partial penetration repair weld.

Subject: [MW:4526] Repair on casting

Dear Freinds

I have query on casting repair

MOC -SA217 WC9
THk -200 mm & 300MM
Repair depth -60 mm & 80mm

Vendor has submitted PQR for butt joint with 40mm thk
As per ASME sec IX THK QUALIFIED IS 5 MM to 200mm
So PQR can be used to repair 200 mm base metal having defect of 60mm
However same PQR cannot be used to repair 300mm base metal with 80 mm depth defect
Kindly let me know if my understanding on ASME sec IX is correct

Regards
Sachin

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...
