Hello,
My company is trying to have ISO 17020 Accreditering
We are aiming to do 2nd and 3rd party inspections, periodic inspections related with API 650 Tanks, API 1104 Pipelines, AD Merkblatter Pressure Vessels, ASME SEC IX Pressure Vessels and some other like these.
Do we have to prepare Procedures, Methods for all of these standards
Or do procedures and methods are needed for non-standard works
Or do we need methods indeed if standards are enough to get the accreditering

Thanks in advance

[MW:2852] Re: effect of heat treatment on Austentic Steel

Hello Sandeep

Generally ASS are not stress relieved after welding due to the chances of sensitization i.e carbide precipitation in the temperature ranges of 425 - 900 degrees C.
However in certain critical applications for dimensional stability in long service, ASS have to be stress relieved after welding.

We have infact successfully carried out SR of ASS (304LN material)at 400 degreesC and 980 degrees C in certain critical jobs as per client requirement.

Stress relieving at temperatures below 400°C is an acceptable practice but results in only modest stress relief. Stress relieving at 425 to 925°C significantly reduces residual stresses that otherwise might lead to stress corrosion cracking or dimensional instability in service. One hour at 870°C typically relieves about 85% of the residual stresses. However, stress relieving in this temperature range can also precipitate grain boundary carbides, resulting in sensitisation that severely impairs corrosion resistance in many media.
To avoid these effects, it is strongly recommended that a stabilised stainless steel (grade 321 or 347) or an extra-low-carbon type (304L or 316L)or with Nitrogen addition like 304LN be used, particularly when lengthy stress relieving is required.

Full solution treatment (annealing), generally by heating to about 1080°C followed by rapid cooling, removes all residual stresses, but is not a practical treatment for most large or complex fabrications.

Low Temperature Stress Relieving:
When austenitic stainless steels have been cold worked to develop high strength, low temperature stress relieving will increase the proportional limit and yield strength (particularly compressive yield strength). This is a common practice for austenitic stainless steel spring wire. A two hour treatment at 345 to 400°C is normally used; temperatures up to 425°C may be used if resistance to intergranular corrosion is not required for the application. Higher temperatures will reduce strength and sensitise the metal, and generally are not used for stress relieving cold worked products.

Prem Nautiyal
Godrej, Mumbai.

[MW:2851] Re: 2849] effect of heat treatment on Austenitic Steel

all about stainless steel.

Effect of austenitic stainless steel composition and heat treatment on cold formability

Introduction

Alloying elements that help stabilize the austenitic phase reduce the tendency of the austenitic stainless steels to work harden. Nickel additions have been used traditionally to do this, but nitrogen also has a profound affect on stability of the austenite phase.

Deep drawing compositions

The nickel level was increased in the superseded BS1449 grade 304S16 compared to the 304S15 level (around 8.0%). This enabled the 304S16 grade with around 8.5% nickel to be used for deep drawing applications. Both these grades are covered in BS EN 10088-2 as 1.4301, but the higher nickel variant can be specified as a 'deep drawing' grade. In contrast the higher nickel variants of 316 (1.4435) were developed for improved 'selective' corrosion resistance, originally in pharmaceutical applications, from lower ferrite levels. The 'standard' 316 type (1.4401) with around 11% nickel should be suitable for deep drawing.

The BS1449 grade 305S19 with its 11.0 - 13.0 % nickel range is even more stable when cold worked. One application for this grade is for temper rolled strip for springs where low magnetic permeability is required. BS EN 10088-2 covers this grade as 1.4303. An alternative is the Sandvik strip grade '13RM19' with 6% manganese and 0.25% nitrogen in addition to 7% nickel.

Stretch forming compositions

Stretch forming application grades would normally have 'standard' nickel levels (around 8.0 / 8.2%), but if the sheet is intended for stretch forming the manufacturer / supplier should be informed, as the final heat treatment / process line speed conditions are adjusted to optimize the mechanical properties. The grain size of cold rolled stainless steel sheet is usually fine enough (around ASTM 7-8) to avoid 'orange peel' surface roughening during pressing.

Effect of cold work and heat treatment on the magnetic permeability of austenitic stainless steels

Introduction

Austenitic stainless steels are generally non-magnetic with magnetic permeabilities of around 1.0. Permeabilities above 1.0 are associated with the amount of either ferrite or martensite phases present in the 'austenitic' steel and so depend on:

  • cold working and heat treatment conditions
  • composition effects

This article discusses the effects of cold working and heat treatment.

Cold working and heat treatment

Cold working of austenitic stainless steels can partially transform austenite to martensite. As martensite is ferromagnetic, cold worked austenitic stainless steels can show a degree of 'pull' towards a magnet. This usually occurs at sharp corners, sheared edges or machined surfaces but can be detected on wrought products such as rods or bars which may have been cold straightened, following the final hot rolling or annealing in the mill.

The degree to which this occurs depends on the compositional effects of austenite stabilising elements. High nickel or nitrogen bearing grades tolerate more cold working before localised increases in permeability are noticed.

These increases in permeability can be reversed by full solution annealing (at temperatures around 1050 / 1120 °C with rapid cooling). This transforms any cold-formed martensite back to austenite, the non-magnetic phase, which is then retained on cooling.

The best austenitic stainless steel types for low permeability applications are those with high austenite stability as these have low permeability in both annealed or cold worked conditions. These include the nitrogen bearing types, 304LN (1.4311) and 316LN (1.4406) or the high nickel types such as 310 (1.4845).

[MW:2848] RE: 2847] Tests required on A350LF2 to use temp. for gas / ambient temperature -(minus)40 Deg C

We should always specify the class also; A350 LF2 Class 1 fittings are factory tested at -45.6 °C, unless otherwise specified for lower temperatures, where as A350 class 2 fittings are recommended for up to -18 °C only.

A350 LF2 Class 1 fitting can be used depending on your design temperature (please check MDMT, and not process/operating temp)

CVN impact testing requirement and energy values shall be as per the design code or contract specifications, whichever is stringent, for e.g. B31.3 refer para 323.2.2.

HI,

I would like to know whether material A350LF2 can be used for
process / ambient temperature of -40 to 50 Deg C. If yes, what are the
testing required to be carried out to ensure that the valve and other

I know LTCS A350LF2 is the right choice but the package supplier is
not able to supply valve body with LTCS A350LF2 and he can only supply

Dear Prem,
I suggest you that if you are planning to attend AWS for Overseas job opportunities then please think about CSWIP 3.1 welding Inspector.
main difference : AWS validity - 3 years.
                         CSWIP 3.1 - Validity 5 years
AWS membership compulsory. every year you have to pay.
CSWIP membership not compulsory.
Renewal - AWS = INR 22000/- after three years CSWIP 3.1 = INR 15,000/-

Choice is yours! - CSWIP 3.1 = Tata Projects limited.
and for Preparatory courses IANT ( Institute of Advanced NDT Technology)

[MW:2839] Re: AWS-CWI best agency in INDIA

Dear Prem,
I suggest you that if you are planning to attend AWS for Overseas job opportunities then please think about CSWIP 3.1 welding Inspector.
main difference : AWS validity - 3 years.
                         CSWIP 3.1 - Validity 5 years
AWS membership compulsory. every year you have to pay.
CSWIP membership not compulsory.
Renewal - AWS = INR 22000/- after three years CSWIP 3.1 = INR 15,000/-

Choice is yours! - CSWIP 3.1 = Tata Projects limited.
and for Preparatory courses IANT ( Institute of Advanced NDT Technology)

Regards,
Nilesh

Yes, you have rightly heard.

Among the four listed agencies IQC is the best. As most of my friends have completed this course successfully through IQC only.

So you can opt for IQC.

[MW:2828] RE: 2827] AWS-CWI best agency in INDIA

IQC is the oldest one in India, and I have no comments on the rest, anyway don’t worry much as industry colleagues says this one is difficult to fail (sorry nothing to degrade this exam but its moral booster to all who ever is appearing), it just basic knowledge on welding fundamentals are required.

All,

I work for LeTourneau Technologies and we build some of the world's largest front end loaders and jack-up drilling rigs.  Obviously, we're a heavy fabrication facility.

Our Safety department has been asked to investigate the need of wearing hard hats in all manufacturing areas.  This would include assembly, machining, heat treat, cutting, as well as welding.

Our GM of Fabrication and Assembly has asked me to get a survey of other companies' policies on the wearing of hard hats.

So, if you could respond and let me know the following.

1.  Does your company require manufacturing personnel to wear hard hats?

2.  What type of industry are you in
       a.  Heavy Fabrication
       b.  Sheet Metal / Automotive
       c.  Construction
       d.  Wholesale Trade
       e.  Cutting
       f.   Other (Please specify)

3.  Does your manufacturing/operations primarily take place... indoors or outdoors.

4.  What is the name of your company.

5.  What country is your facility located?

Also, if you have recently changed companies or know for sure the policies of a facility other than your current location, feel free to answer the survey from that point of view as well.

Thanks,

Joel Armstrong, CWI
