[MW:3599] Re: why astm heat treated pipe (stress releived and normalised )pipes are used

Dinesh, using a API or ASTM material is a long debated subject and
only actual usage and experience can throw light. Technical speaking
you can get clear answers, but practically it can still be debated.

On heat treatment, as you know the welded pipes has quit a few
property variables at the seam which vary per different heat
treatments and by the different grades. The fluid/service affects the
seam and for different services, the seam property is required to
ensure failures don't occur, related to varies forms of failures. The
grade which suits the service with least failure form and can have a
longer life will be the choosen one. Most cases the grades are not
selected for continueos operation but occational situations like the
maintainnce down time where the pipes are subject to fluxuations which
cannot be predicted and cause failures once the system is up.

In simple the grades are choosen by the application and operation
point of view.
