RE: [MW:3720] Carpenter steel Alloy20 welding

Dear Mr.Pradip,

We are using LR type filler material .

I have read that these repairs are nothing but oxides and avoiding these is very difficult.

Is it true.

Regards,

Shashi Kumar

Dear Mr. Shashi kumar,

I have attached the spec sheet of Alloy-20 for your reference.Usually this alloy is a fully austenitic alloy, so requires good cleanliness to ensure crack free(usually hot cracks) welds. Usually welding consumable should have low residuals ( S & P). E-320 and ER-320LR consumables are fine.

Usually this alloy does not require preheating, for barrier layer deposition on 4" thick flange preheating (100-150 deg C)  is recommended. If this deposition is a multi layer deposition, 2nd layer onwards in the interpass should be controlled 150 deg C max. Clearing LPI is recommended for each pass of weld deposition.

Due to high nickel content the wetting behavior of this alloy can be a problem, hence proper bead overlap (40-50 %) would ensure a sound defect free weld deposit.

Looking at the problem, the defect looks to me as improper fusion or lack of interbead fusion. If you do a light grinding ,then improper fusion would be reveled, otherwise LPI would detect it.

Look forward to further feedback from your end.

Thanks

Dear Gentlemen,

Is preheat of work piece required for Alloy20 overlay on P1 (100 thk Girth flange)

using ER-320LR and for welding of Alloy 20 plates.

I am Experiencing Lot of defects in welding of Alloy 20 plates SB 463 / 16 thk .

Defects are linear but are not actually slag.

What could they be???

Consumable used is E-320 and ER-320LR.

Will appreciate immediate response.
