Importance of Welding Inspector Qualification for an IWE

For a person already having an IWE qualification, is welding inspection certifications such as CSWIP or AWS-CWI important for further qualifications?

  • Shankar N AN INTERNATIONAL WELDING ENGINEER SHOULD BE AWARE OF BOTH DESTRUCTIVE AND NON DESTRUCTIVE TYPE OF TESTING THE WELDING SPECIMEN OF ALL THE MATERIALS AND ITS CHEMICAL COMPOSITIONS , IT IS JUST AN ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION FOR THE IWE
  • Steven Tuck
Steven Tuck It depends where you want to head in your career. It is likely to be beneficial.
  • Chetan Shinde
Chetan Shinde Not necessary .already you are an welding engineer.Even syllabus of IWE is quite more than AWS or CSWIP.
  • Chaitanya Kanuprasad Purohit
Chaitanya Kanuprasad Purohit welding engineer specify the requirements which need to be confirmed during execution of welding work. Meaning, Engineer has better clarity, when, what, why, and how material or welding going to behave.
Inspectors role is just to check the requirements specified.
  • Jon Taylor TechWeldI
Jon Taylor TechWeldI I think they all have important roles within our industry, it depends if you work in the USA then AWS would be better, for UK and EU then CSWIP or PCN is well known. IWE is great, but "hands on" knowledge is also very helpful when talking to welders and inspectors

Angelo Giovann Mario Catalano IWE is for design, construction and produccion: is a Responsible Welding Coordinator -AWS-CWI is only for quality control
  • Niekie Jooste
Niekie Jooste It depends on the relevant legal requirements and regulations in your country. In some countries, certain types of work are "reserved" for people with particular qualifications. Even if you have a "higher" qualification such as an IWE, if the law says that the inspection must be done with somebody that is a registered inspector, then you need that qualification to do the work. Other countries take the approach that you need to have the necessary qualifications and experience to do the work, and leaves what that is, up to the local industry to "self regulate". In this "self regulated" environment, it is common practice for a "higher" qualification to be able to do "lower" qualification work. Another issue is that some inspection type jobs call for a specific inspector qualification, such as CSWIP. The HR people hiring would throw out your application if you do not have this qualification, even if your qualification is "higher".

Prabhakara S.S For an already qualified IWE, is a MSc. in Welding Engineering an important qualification or is it not necessary as I see Cranfield in UK offers MSc. in Welding Eng.
  • TOCHUKWU DARLINGTON EKEH (IWE)
TOCHUKWU DARLINGTON EKEH (IWE) People often mistake Inspectors for IWE. However, they are two different stuffs entirely. IWE training is more of design, metallurgy, welding process and their applications. They are responsible for developing processes and systems that is often followed by Inspectors. To answer your question, you don't need Inspection certifications to become an IWE. To become an IWE, you must have completed all Welding coordination requirements which includes immense knowledge of welding inspection and NDE. After certification to IWE, you don't need AWS CWI or it's equivalent.
  • Gurcharan Singh CEng, MWeldI
Gurcharan Singh CEng, MWeldI CSWIP is a qualification for Welding Inspection which goes in to more depth for the practical aspects than IWE. It is beneficial for Inspection/QA/QC/Surveyor type of roles. IWE is more specific for Design/Engineering roles. In my opinion if you have IWE then MSc in Welding Engineering is not required as IWE is more recognised and well accepted than MSc.
  • Gurcharan Singh CEng, MWeldI
Gurcharan Singh CEng, MWeldI MSc will be helpful if you want to work in Industry other than Oil & Gas...such as Aerospace.
  • Alan Bishop
Alan Bishop I agree with most of the comments made already but would add something from personal experience and that is I don't know anyone with IWE who works as a welding inspector. Why would you? the two jobs are quite different even though anyone with IWE would automatically have covered the theory component for welding inspector, the practical component is the most important. Remember in Germany you can obtain your B.Sc in say Mechanical Engineering and then spend 3 months at the DVS doing a Welding Engineering course. Shortly after passing that, you can be awarded IWE. I would not allow a person like this with no experience in a workshop to perform welding inspection activities, even though he has a higher welding qualification.
  • Alan Bishop
Alan Bishop Someone also mentioned MSc. I have not lived in the UK for many years but I remember a time when you could do an HND in Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, etc. and then go straight to MSc at Cranfield or Aston Universities. In most countries now where IIW rules are followed, you need a first degree (i.e. B.Sc) before you can be awarded IWE. The other route is via C.Eng. in the UK at least, and you could become Member of TWI and thereby be granted C. Eng and with it comes IWE. However, in my opinion, if you have a Masters in Welding Engineering from any reputable university, you are no less a Welding Engineer than if you had IWE.

Malcolm Whiteman with 30 plus years in the welding industry i cannot pressure
  • Malcolm Whiteman
Malcolm Whiteman sorry fat thumb sindrome... anyway...
engineer status is thrown around very loosly. i interviewed a guy here in the USA proudly tells me is certified welding engineer and presents me with CSWIP 3.1 certificate
  • Effendi Sitanggang
Effendi Sitanggang In this difficult situation, we still need CSWIP or CWI Certification just to anticipate
  • Angelo Schipani
Angelo Schipani I'm IWE and IWI-C; I suggest both certification.
They are complementary to one another and helps to achieve better results in welding applications.
Must to claim the recognition of the equilibrium between IWI (International Welding Institute) and AWS certifications!
  • Chris Eady
Chris Eady The diploma and the certificate are not the same. The original question was, "for someone with an IWE qualification, is welding inspection certification necessary?"
The IWE diploma is an educational qualification, which shows that a level of knowledge and understanding was demonstrated on the day of the examination, and the diploma is held by the individual for life.
The CSWIP Welding Inspector certificate is assurance of competence in the tasks and responsibilities defined at http://www.cswip.com/schemes/welding-inspection/ for that job role.
CSWIP is UKAS-accredited iaw ISO/IEC 17024, the international standard for personnel certification. The continued competence of the holder requires currency and recency of practice, they must be working as a welding inspector with evidence of satisfactory performance. The certificate must be renewed periodically and recertification is by examination. Welding inspection is a critical job role that requires specific competence.
