[MW:16816] RE: 16801] SWPS

SWPS – standard welding procedure specifications

Not the same as AWS D1.1 – Section 3, prequalified .

AWS had a program years ago to collect WPSs and PQRs from industry with the intent of writing WPSs that have been tested and proved out by PQRs many, many times by the  welding community.  These WPS’s if followed exactly were proposed to be acceptable without any additional qualification;  i.e. for the conditions stated eliminating the need for PQRs.  There are many more AWS SWPSs than are permitted by ASME.  The subset of permitted SWPSs is listed in ASME Sc IX, Appendix E.

Copies of the SWPSs may be purchased from AWS:   http://pubs.aws.org search on the acronym SWPS and you will get a list of available SWPSs.

You will find that while they are not inexpensive ($248.00 each), they cost less than making procedure qualification test plates and having the required testing performed.  However, the ASME permitted SWPSs  are very limited in scope.  Per Sc IX SWPSs may not be modified or combined with other WPSs/PQRs – See Sc IX QW-450.

My own personal view is that my suspicions are aroused as to the competence of a company trying to employ these.  In over 30 years of reviewing welding documentation (WPSs, PQRs, etc.) I have only seen 1 or 2 companies that employed them for ASME Code work.
