[MW:21499] Welding Process Change ( From SMAW to GMAW)

Hello Expert,
 I am seeking your technical advice in terms of Welding process.

For welding of crane girder  we are using SMAW welding with root and hot pass DPT.
 Now people want to change the welding process from SMAW to GMAW. (but root with SMAW)
Plate thickness ranging from 25 mm to 50 mm.

Please give your advice, 
Your prompt action will be highly appreciated

Both are very similar with min. yield stress of 50ksi (50T has higher range though 50-80ksi compared to 50-75ksi of 50). See more here

[MW:21502] CAN WE PERFORM PWHT AFTER SS 304 CLADING/OVERLAY ON ALOY STEEL

Dear Sir,
I have to do PWHT after explosive bonding and some portion overlay welding in heat exchanger. We have to do overlay and weld cladding of SS 304 on SA 336 Gr. F5. PWHT heating cycle is 720 C at 2 hours.

 Material : SA 336 Gr F5 + SS 304 CLAD

now my doubt is if we will do PWHT in sensitization range so that there is chance of IGC in SS material and SS clading will not fulfill its corrosin resistance purpose.
so kindly pls suggest we can do or not do???

[MW:21501] Re: Tests for unknown material

Thank you all for your advice. I forgot to mentioned that I have been handled a very small sample of each type of material. Therefore, destructive tests are out of the question. Would you gentlemen say, PMI and hardness test could provide sufficient data to determine what grade of material those samples are likely to be?

           Based on your requirement basic  and simple test  is  chemical analysis from which you can know the elements present in material.  If  you wanted to know mechanical properties need to carry out tesile, Izod Etc.

Lack of fusion: base metal not melted. Why? Because base metal temperature did not achieve 1510 degC. Why? Because heat input not adequate (forget high or low). You may use  a high heat input welding method (per definition) and you may still get lack of fusion. With GMAW it happens mainly because the welder "runs" too fast in order to achieve high productivity rates. You do not wonder why many EPC specs do not allow GMAW either for pressure equipment or for critical structural steel?

voltage depends on Arc length , manual welding ( constant current), it varies with welder to welder and u can preset the voltage before start welding but u can set amps,, but in GMAW, u can preset voltage and separately and Arc length will be always constant because it is Constant Voltage/Potential Power source

In GTAW the arc is 10 to 15 Volt. In the other processes the arc is much higher. In GMAW a very skilled welder may achieve 20 Volts.  The Amps depend on the diameter of the rod and the speed on the ability of the welder who in this process has a very good control of the pool which crucial for the heat input.  The overall  efficiency may be low but if the lost energy is not dissipated in the weld pool it is not contributing to the heat input in the weld

You can do per as good engineering practice this can lead to problem in weld after welding with GTAW on SMAW pass due to high heat input in GTAW..

voltage depends on Arc length , manual welding ( constant current), it varies with welder to welder and u can preset the voltage before start welding but u can set amps,, but in GMAW, u can preset voltage and separately and Arc length will be always constant because it is Constant Voltage/Potential Power source

In GTAW the arc is 10 to 15 Volt. In the other processes the arc is much higher. In GMAW a very skilled welder may achieve 20 Volts.  The Amps depend on the diameter of the rod and the speed on the ability of the welder who in this process has a very good control of the pool which crucial for the heat input.  The overall  efficiency may be low but if the lost energy is not dissipated in the weld pool it is not contributing to the heat input in the weld

You can do per as good engineering practice this can lead to problem in weld after welding with GTAW on SMAW pass due to high heat input in GTAW..
