Re: [MW:24800] PERFORMANCE QUALIFICATION

Dear Mr. Mac,

Supplemeting to Mr. Sridhar's excellent reply

AWS D 1.1  qualification is on volumetric NDT (UT & RT)
AWS D 1.1  has pre-qualified / recognized list of materials
If the material you referred in your original email, if they are also find mentioned in AWS D 1.1 then fine.  Else you need to re-qualify.

With regards,

Dear Mr. Mac,

Pl. refer to your mail towards clarifications over performance Qualification of welders and our views
as follows:

1. welder qual. done as per sec. IX of ASME in 6G on CS shall qualify him for both pipe & plate and
in all positions and fillets of all thicknesses in all positions.

2. AWS D 1.1 also follows ASME for welding part. Hence no problem & no separate qual. test is required.

3. But you have not mentioned the type of consumable used in your 6G position qualf. test.

4. If you have used E 6013 (F2), in your 6G welding,  then you can use only F2 & F1 type cons.

5. If you have used E 7018 (F4), then, it qualifys all F4, F3, F2 & F1.

6. Hence, if you are going to use E 7018 in your H-beam welding, think of points 4 & 5 and decide.
If it was F2, then do Fillet weld qual. test as per any code. If not, no need to worry.

7. If you have used E 7018 and TPI is still particular of AWS D1.1, you can prepare a new WPS  and enclose
your approved ASME sec. IX  WPS & PQR docs. as a support
AWS accepts pre-qualified WPS done as per ASME in structural welding also.

8. But mind again points 4 & 5 and decide.

9. Hope, it clarifys all your points.

Confirm the results for our records.

Regards,
Sridhar.

Subject: [MW:24761] PERFORMANCE QUALIFICATION

Dear Sir,

(B31.1 Code) We have a qualified pipe welder with 6G position (18.26 thickness test coupon), as per ASME Sec IX Table QW-461.9, he is qualified for all positions for groove and fillet weld - plate and pipe.
This qualified welder was task to weld pipe support (H Beam), It has been questioned by the TPI that this welder should be qualified again as per AWS D1.1.
My Questions are;
1. Should we qualify this welder again as per AWS D1.1? If yes, what is the supporting code for this.
2. Does ASME Sec IX Rules for this situation?

Need your advise.....

Thank you

Mac Palola

Re: [MW:34105] SA266 GR4N 4 Cycle SPWHT

Hi,  You are correct, Minimum refers to the one cycle for which this part will expose until final work shop PWHT. hence mill test certificate shall include this.  Max. SPWHT, refers to additional cycles of heat treatment that are reserved for future repairs during equipment lifetime.  Again, these simulated no. Of cycles shall be specified in MTC.  The idea is we need to make sure that steel mechanical properties are not compromised upon exposure to multiple repairs (i e 4 cycles in your case).  One could say, if steel is subjected to 4 cycles and is ok, then it should by defacto be good for one cycle, yet, this is wrong assumption cause mechanical problems and microstructure of materials varies accordingly based on no. Of cycles for which material will expose. This is apparent in alloy steel and especially for impact test values as an example.  In your case, this forged CS with properties before PWHT can be understood to be " as forged" condition (i.e. Wit...

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...
