Re: [MW:10946] SOCKET WELDS

please below my view;
You may proceed with socket instead of butt. However, I can confidently say that you will have more disadvantage if you go with socket.
you must provide approx 1/16' gap to allow for thermal expansion. This gap can lead to problem of overstress/cracking. Because of discontinuity in internal of pipe, SW is also susceptible to erosion.

From strength point of view, butt weld is much better than socket weld.

you no need to prepare a specific inspection and testing plan for your SW. You may go with your butt's ITP.

Dear experts,

                  We have contractor who is suppose to carryout some repair welding for 1/2" piping schedule 160 and the material is  A106 Gr B. Due to unavailability of material they wanted to have socket welds but the existing welds is butt welds. can we allow them to have socket welds? if yes, will socket welds have the strength as butt welds? I have to give ITP also. What should I give in the ITP?

Kindly I need your valuable inputs.

Regards
Ilangkumaran
