[MW:11124] RE: 11122] ECA

Hi Rajiv,

AUT, both TOFD and Phased Array UT are  accepted state of art  NDE practice in ASME BPV code. ASME has approved these techniques through a series of code cases, see in the following hyperlinks.

ASME,Sec-V, article -4,, gives all the detailed requirements for both the techniques.

Depending on the availability within the NDE organization  both TOFD and Phased array can be  very effective tools for defect sizing  and ECA in future.

DNV OFFSHORE STANDARD F-101, clauses  B-100 through B-1200, provides good details on AUT(phased array) for offshore pipelines. On the contrary API-1104( 11.4.7.3 Automated Ultrasonic Weld Testing ) have very little  details about AUT and the reliability criteria is to be equated to manual pulse echo technique. My feel is that API-1104 is still lagging with respect to other codes to accept these techniques.

Should you need to convince your client on the acceptance of AUT , a good presentation with all the ASME code cases. techniques, good technical details , case studies would definitely be useful. Before you do that source the NDE service providers, audit their facilities, equipments, personnel qualifications and be happy with the NDE procedures.

Should you like to get more details on phased array feel free to download these books, as highlighted in the attachment.

Thanks.

Subject: [MW:11122] ECA

Hello ALL ,

I am involved in one of the Onshore pipeline project , we are going to execute the welding with Automatic and SMAW process ,and NDE by AUT - Phases arrays .

we have reference in the specification for AUT for  Auto welding and Manual welding ,
  • API -1104
  • ASTM E1961
  • ASTM E 164
  • DNV -OS-F101
My queries is that , the above reference code / standard to be use for the AUT , except DNV , i can understand the involvement of the API and ASTM but not about the DNV because if is for offshore service.

the client / PMC is not ready to understand the and asking to have the reference for AUT from DNV aslo in the Testing of equipment and Procedure.
we have the option to for ECA ( engineering critical assessment) and which shall be effect on the AUT procedure etc.

so , i need the some one have been faced such problem before , where ever the AUT procedure has to be evalute with two code reference i.e. API and DNV and ECA has beeen involved.

Regards

Heat tint (temper) colours on stainless steel surfaces heated in air // Heat tint

Introduction The colour formed when stainless steel is heated, either in a furnace application or in the heat affected zone of welds, is dependent on several factors that are related to the oxidation resistance of the steel. The heat tint or temper colour formed is caused by the progressive thickening of the surface oxide layer and so, as temperature is increased, the colours change.   Oxidation resistance of stainless steels However, there are several factors that affect the degree of colour change and so there is no a single table of colour and temperature that represents all cases. The colours formed can only be used as an indication of the temperature to which the steel has been heated. Factors affecting the heat tint colours formed Steel composition The chromium content is the most important single factor affecting oxidation resistance. The higher the chromium, the more heat resistant the steel and so the development of the heat tint colou...

Re: [MW:10788] ON PLOT PIPING & OFF PLOT PIPING

Piping systems involved for the flow lines and gathering lines from the well head isolation valve to the production facility or processing plant isolation valve are determined as OFF PLOT. ON PLOT defines piping system in the processing plant and production platform. ANSI/ASME B31.4 applies for off plot piping system. B31.4 allows the use of either API 1104 or ASME section IX (as appropriate). However, occasionally, a very small system such as piping within 500 feet of a processing plant (some client also said 400 feet) may be declared B31.3 rather than B31.4. When B31.3 is invoked, only ASME Section IX is used. before you decide which code to use for welding procedure and/or welder qualification for pipe welding, you have to know the design and construction code applicable to the system. Please read far enough into scope and diagram illustrating the application of either B31.3 and B31.4 hope this helps rgds 2011/4/21 pradip kumar sil < pradipsil@gmail.com > Dear all, ...
