Re: [MW:35549] WELDING OF SS 310 MATERIAL CRACK ISUUE..

In addition to cn Sridhar sir's recommendation following points to be considered.

ER310Mo produces a Nil Delta Ferrite weld since it is used at High Temperatures and prone to Hot Cracking.

Please share the photograph of the crack with location to determine the type of crack such as Hot cracking, IGC (intergranular corrosion) etc..

Solidification cracking (hot cracking) is also known as centerline cracking as it occurs in the weld centerline. Can be prevented by below methods.

1. Normally in Austenitic stainless steel a Delta ferrite content of 3-8% is recommended to prevent Hot cracking but ER310Mo is a Nil deltaferrite weld and prone to Hot cracking.
2. Reducing the impurity contents in the electrode such as sulphur and phosporous to a very low level.
3. Restricting the Interpass temperature to a maximum of 100degC as it will enhance fast cooling and reduce the time spent between the liquidus and solidus curve during the final stages of solidication.
4. The same effect is attained by restricting  the Heat Input to a reasonable level.
5. By maintaining proper weld bead width to depth ratio, Normally a ratio of 1:1 is recommended and maximum recommended is 2:1 and beyond which Hot cracking will occur.

Please share a photograph of the crack to understand its nature.

Dear Mr. Praveen,

Try with following guidelines if possible.

1.Control heat input (1 to 1.5 kJ/mm) and interpass temperature (100–150°C).

2.Consider using ER309L or ER310L filler metals instead of ER310.

3. Use TIG or pulsed MIG welding with proper technique.

4. Ensure clean base metal and proper joint design to reduce restraint.

5. Use Stringer beads over weaving to reduce heat input and distortion.

6. If cracking persists, use nickel-based fillers (Inconel 600, 625) for high-temperature service.

Hope above info. will help to get defect free welds.

C Sridhar.
