Re: [MW:28431] Can I use WPS/PQR P NO-1, Group NO-1 (PLATE) to P NO-1, Group NO-2 (PLATE) for welding of ASTM A333 Gr.6 (P No: 1, Group No: 1) to ASTM A350 Gr.LF2 CL.1 (P No: 1, Group No: 2) ?

Dear All,

For welding of ASTM A333 Gr.6 and related (Flanges and fittings)

Please note the following:

1. You have to qualify the PQR with P1G1 to P1G2 only.
This will qualify all the combinations of group numbers.  (The ASME interpretation is attached for your reference.)

2. You can do the PQR on plate with P1G1 to P2G2

3. Position should be 3G. (In piping 5G or 6G can be followed) Refer QW-405.2

4. Minimum thickness limits are as per QW-403.6
(Suggestion: PQR 1 : 6mm plate to plate, GTAW; PQR 2: 6mm Plate to Plate: GTAW+SMAW or SMAW only; PQR 3: 10mm Plate to Plate GTAW+SMAW) these 3 PQR will give a range from 3mm to 16mm of base  material thickness.)

5. For Maximum thickness limits,if your construction code is ASME B 31.3, you have to limit your maximum qualified thickness as per Table 323.3.1

Dear Experts,

We are actually in the process of making WPS for Hot Tapping . in this context while referring to API 1104 , unable to interpret the below paragraph from API 1104 In Service welding .

Kindly help in understanding

B.2.3.1.2 Pipeline Operating Conditions

For in-service welds, an increase in the severity of the pipeline operating conditions (in terms of weld cooling rates)
above the group qualified constitutes an essential variable.

Thanks in advance

Specific to your query, please see below clause of ASME Section IX.

QW-211 BASE METAL
The base metals may consist of either plate, pipe, or
other product forms. Qualification in plate also qualifies
for pipe welding and vice versa.

Dear Nithin,

My query:

Can I use Plate  PQR (P1 G1 to P1 G2),  for piping welding job (P1 G1 to P1 G2) ? and both PQR with impact requirement.

Hi Please check your query,

You are saying "Can I use WPS/PQR P NO-1, Group  NO-1 (PLATE) to P NO-1, Group NO-2 (PLATE) " if your PQR is P1 G1 to P1 G2, then you can use this PQR for subject application with impact testing.
If your PQR is P1 G1 to P1 G1, then this PQR cannot be supported for welding the subject application.

Dear Experts,

1. WPS/PQR (P NO: 1, Group No-1 to P NO: 1, Group No-1 ) is available with contractor

2. Pipe material: ASTM A333 Gr.6 (P No: 1, Group No: 1)

     Flange/Fitting material: ASTM A350 Gr.LF2 CL.1 (P No: 1, Group No: 2)

     WPS/PQR ( P NO: 1, Group No-1 to P NO: 1, Group No-2 ) is not available with contractor

3.  Charpy "V" notch test to be done

My query is

Can I use WPS/PQR P NO-1, Group  NO-1 (PLATE) to P NO-1, Group NO-2 (PLATE)   for welding of  ASTM A333 Gr.6 (P No: 1, Group No: 1) to ASTM A350 Gr.LF2 CL.1 (P No: 1, Group No: 2) ?

Please give suggestions, Is it possible in accordance with ASME Section-IX  ?
