As Pradip explained, ER NiCrMo3 is the best for DSS

Hi Ahmed,

In order to facilitate a complete repair an all position grove welding procedure would be the best option. Provided that's mandated by your client.

One thing which is still unclear, why your client is insisting on ERNiCrMo15 filler (Special Metals 725NDUR or similar) to be used. A few rationales behind this question are as follows:-

  1. Duplex & super duplex stainless steels are easily repairable with matching filler metals
  2. In case your client wants to insist on austenitic filler metals or electrodes with superior corrosion resistance, higher PREN, then filler metals/ electrodes conforming to alloy 625 is commonly specified.
  3. However please note that DSS and SDSS are always applied for challenging and extremely high corrosive environments .Thus use of under matching or over matching fillers/ electrodes definitely have impacts on the over all corrosion resistance and integrity of any component.
  4. Alloy 725 is recommended, where age -hardening heat treatment or PWHT is specified. DSS and SDSS do not require any PWHT.

Looking at your query on Procedure qualification, qualification of PQR on pipes or plate would be a much better option than qualifying the same on a round bar.

It would be advisable to get the first hand engineering information about the product to be repaired by welding, such as base metal, design/ operating conditions, design requirements, corrosion requirements  and so on.

Appreciate your response.

Thanks.

Dear All

We have to do repair and weld built up on duplex stainless steel base metal with inconel filler (ERNiCrMo15; SFA-5.14) as suggested by Client.

Process GTAW

We need to qualify a procedure as per ASME section IX on DSS Round bar of 40mm

Expected qualification.

All duplex base metal.

Weld repair thickness: all thicknesses

All diameter

All positions

Kindly advise

1: Whether groove weld qualification will be good option for it or any other option.

2: Whether PQR  testing is possible on round bar

3: Whether given Filler metal is suitable.

4: How to get side bend test specimen to comply Sec. IX

5: Any other test other than tensile and bend test to be done.

Kindly respond with reference to ASME Sec IX.

With best regards

Ahmad
