Dear Sir/Madam,

IJ shall be installed on above ground. The basic principal for using the IJ is -

1) In under ground pipeline for PCP system the input voltage 220 V current. But in above ground , all the instrument are operate in mili volt. The main function of IJ is protect the voltage form under ground to above ground. Its act as a resistance.

2) The sparkarestor are installed with IJ. So it should be installed at above ground.

Both , it depends project requirement

Should IJs be installed aboveground ?

Yes , Painting Class will changed

same is buried below ground?

Yes , Painting Class will changed

Also our current practise is we provide Cathodic protection to the underground portion and the portion above the IJ is ideally protected by painting ?

Your understanding is correct.

Also thickness of IJ Also consider.

Whether you consider ?

This is with reference to Insulating Joint being installed on Steel pipelines to isolate the aboveground section from the underground section. I needed to know what is the advisable position for installing the same? Should IJs be installed aboveground or is it OK if the same is buried below ground? Also our current practise is we provide Cathodic protection to the underground portion and the portion above the IJ is ideally protected by painting. In some cases the portion above the buried IJ is also coated till the point it comes aboveground. Please provide me with suggestion / recommendations regarding the same.

For some IJs we have started exposing the IJs and keeping it exposed in a chamber & filling it with sand. Is this a viable solution? Please advise
