Re: [MW:24983] P8 material WPS to comply QW 407.2_PWHT temperature_time

Dear Praveen,

Thanks for the input. My specific doubt is still pending. Why should i need to do a new PQR, even  QW 407.1 [b] may be valid, may allow to have WPS revised for PWHT time and temperature?

Another one is what deteriorating effect of long PWHT hold time, since this time is fixed based on the job thickness -  is greater of 7 inch, and its mid section needs to have an acceptable micro structure.

Please clarify.

Thanks,

Dear Mani

If you have impact requirements the clause 407,2 also applies , in that case  the requirement of new pqr is needed.
Secondly the long soaking time of 7 hours , will have some deteriorating effect on ASS, Kindly check that also.

In this case , you need to qualify new PQR.

Read ASME Section IX QW 407..clauses.

Dear All,

I have a Query.

We have a SMAW-WPS [ASME SEC IX] for material P8/G1 – PQR with CHARPY tested. In this PQR it was post weld heat treated to re solution anneal at 1090 DEG C for 2 Hrs.

Now we have new production weld requirement  on a part of 8 inch thick with PWHT [solution anneal] at temperature 1130 DEG C and soak time of 7 hrs.

Please clarify me, is it acceptable to revise the WPS [with the same PQR] to address PWHT temperature as 1130 DEG C, and time as 7 hrs to utilize for the new production weld.

In doing this I considered QW407.1(b) (2) 'PWHT within specified temperature range' – in this case specified temperature range for solution anneal as 1040 DEG C minimum by ASTM A351, and NO maximum is specified.

I appreciate your response with the intent requirement of QW 407.2
