RE: [MW:11592] FCAW using restriction in offshore applications

Dear Goswami,

Here are the additional required information.

The design code is AWS D1.1/EEMUA 158
No additional specification is noted
The material to be welded is BS 7191 Gr 450
Welding consumable is E8016-G stick + E81T1 Flux cored wire

With best regards,
Elshan.

Hi Elshan,

To the best of my knowledge FCAW/GMAW-S is accepted for fabrication of offshore structures with certain restrictions. Certain information would be helpful:-
  • The design code
  • Additional specifications and requirements by certification bodies, e.g ABS, DNV, LR etc
  • The materials to be welded by FCAW process.
  • Welding consumable proposed.
Below are the examples of accepted welding processes from  DNV-OS-C401-FABRICATION AND TESTING OF OFFSHORE STRUCTURES.

Appreciating your reply.

Thanks.

 Welding processes

Welding may be performed with the following processes unless otherwise specified:

— manual metal arc welding (metal arc welding with covered electrode)

— self-shielded tubular-cored arc welding

—  submerged arc welding

—  submerged arc welding with strip electrode

—  metal inert gas welding, (MIG) welding

—  metal active gas welding, (MAG) welding

—  tubular-cored metal arc welding with active gas shield-FCAW

—  tubular-cored metal arc welding with inert gas shield- FCAW (Mixed /Inert GAS)

—  gas tungsten arc welding, (GTAW)

— plasma arc welding.

I don't think there is any restrictions on the use of FCAW on offshore applications. We did use FCAW when I was working for Sarawak Shell Berhad (SSB) on a 316L Cladded pipepine, unless it is specifically stated on the project requirement that you can not use FCAW.

Hi friends,

I would like to find an answer if the FCAW is restriced to use in offshore applications as welding process even if the correct wire is used for to be welded materials?

Best regards,
Elshan.
