Dear MOHAMMAD SAJID ALAM ,
Length of pipes just depends upon the approved QAP by the customer.
that what is the requirment of the length of pipe.
Yes but still API 5L 44TH EDITION 2007/ISO 3183
9.11.3.3 PAGE 37
GIVEN SOME GUIDENSE BUT ALSO SAYS:
UNLESS OTHERWISE AGREED, Random lengths shall be delivered with in the tolerance limit in table 12.
YOU can refer that also
THE ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA FOR YOU REFERENCE AS PER API 5L 44TH EDITION:
FOR PLAIN END PIPE:
Random length designation
Random length designation M(ft) | Minimum length M(ft) | Minimum average length for average order length item M(ft) | Maximum length M(ft)
18(60) | 6,40(21.0) | 16.00(52.5) | 19.81(65.0)
For joining of the pipes you have to refer Pipe Laying code API standard 1104.welding of pipe lines and related facilities.
As your acceptance lit is 12 to 18 mtrs.
but some what additional limit is also allowed in approved QAP by the customer. So just only that amount of pipe length pipes with given tolerance limits are allowed. As we are manufactures of API 5L psl1 and psl2 pipes.
we never use to join pipes and send to customers and it is also not allowed.
BUT STILL IF THE ORGANISATION WHERE YOU INSPECTING SAYING THAT THEY HAVE APPROVAL FROM CUSTOMER.
Just asked for approved QAP. AND THERE PROCEDURE FOR JOINING PIPS.
AS WHEN EVER YOU GOING TO JOIN TWO PIPES YOU NEED TO GO THROUGH WELDABILITY TEST.
IN WHICH THE STRENGTH OF THE JOINTS BETWEEN TWO PIPES CHECKED AND AFTER TESTING /APPROVEED WPS/PQR ONLY FURTHER PROCESS GOES ON.
AND IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO JOIN TWO PIPES OTHER THAN SMAW PROCESS.
IF STILL THEY GET APPROVAL FROM CUSTOMER THEY HAVE TO GO FOR WELDABILITY TEST.
and its the first time i lessoning that customer is allowing to join two short length pipes.so just see first written approval and only go further.
AS API PIPES USE TO GET MANUFACTURE BY API5L 44TH EDITION 2007.
THIS IS THE CODE AND LATEST EDITION WHICH USE TO BE FOLLOWED BY ALL PIPE MANUFACTURING COMPINIES.
even in PSL 2 MORE THAN 5 % OF WELD LENGTH REPAIR IS NOT ALLOWED AND EVEN NOT REPAIR ON PARENT MATEL ie pipe body also not allowed.
I think You get your answer of the query.

Subject: RE: [MW:11504] Differance between PSL1 AND PSL2 PIPE/SHORT LENGTH JOINTES PIPE ISSUE/PSL2 CARBON STEEL PIPE
Dear Rupesh Thanks for your reply. I am doing inspection for CARDBON STEEL PIPES (PSL2) manufacturing by SAW method. Ours pipes length requirement is 12 meter to 18 meter (means length should be minimum 12 meter and maximum 18 meter). This pipe manufacturer has some short lengthpipes like 8 meter, 6 meter; 5meter etc. of same Gradeand they want to join some short length pipes by SMAW method. After joining this short length pipes by SMAW method that pipes will be accepted in the category of PSL2 Pipe or not. THIS TYPE OF PIPE IS ALLOW AS PER API5L/PSL2. If yes then then what the mandatory requirements for inspection/testing of that short lengths jointed pipes.
