Dear Phillip, There is a quite big difference between welding operator and welder. welding operator works on automatic welding process equipments and welder's works on their personal skill performance. so both are different aspects. As ASME mention that validity for any welder's skill is applicable max 6months and also it depend upon his failure rate during production. as far as concern a new welder who has not passed the specific required test by the company who is going to employ for specific project he must give a test. For a welder who is already qualified for specific process and position and he could not able to do the welding for almost 6 months and after 6months the job is available in the same welding process and position then it is on the basis of client approval for any project he can do production test which he passed with RT results then he is eligible for the same welding process and position qualification. but if he failed then he has go for under training for some weeks and depend upon skill verification he must give qualification test again. as per AWS D1.1 clause 4.19.1.1. welder can not qualify in the same way of welding operator. regards SHAMESH LOTLIKAR --- On Thu, 7/22/10, Philip, Taiye (Lagos) <Taiye.Philip@deltaafrik.com> wrote:
