The flux wire combination is acceptable provided the either the conditions of QW-409(b) or QW-409(c) are met, i.e. the flux is limited to the brand and type used in welding the PQR. Obviously, the PQR should demonstrate that the required mechanical properties are achieved. Classification by the supplier is a simplification whereby you can substitute one manufacturers product for another. There are situations where the flux manufacturer either does not have sufficient demand or has not anticipated the need to perform a specific classification. When an applicable SFA Classification does not exist, the Code allows the use of brand name and type, and compliance with QW-404.5 (chemistry or A-no.), in addition to mechanical testing to qualify the material. (see interpretation IX-77-09 and interpretation IX-83-46 ). Note that the Code does not permit reclassification by the user of the consumables, this is done solely by the consumable manufacturer (see IX-83-46, question 2).
