[MW:33416] Re: Procedure for hydrotest of pipeline GRE (UNDERGROUND)

hi, Mr denaouda,

you can refer procedure provided and the last pl contact pipe mfg for final pressure and holding.(i think who is mfg CPI,oman ?)

there is two one test is strength test of 4 hr and second is a leak test of 24 hr at design or 1.1 design.

RE: [MW:33413] MPI for duplex stainless steel

Hi Siraj,

Please look at the attached links below. Duplex has a complicated microstructure. Ferrite is magnetic, austenite is non-magnetic. The volume % of ferrite is not fixed. In welds % Ferrite changes due to changes welding process parameters. In casting due to changes of casting parameters , cooling rates.

Hence there would always be a weak & inconsistent magnetic permeability which could leads to " spurious indications"  and unreliable results.

Hence, it's a common practice to go with LPI for surface and subsurface inspection.

Thanks.

Re: [MW:33408] MPI for duplex stainless steel

As per my understanding duplex SS has combination of ferrite and austenite microsturcture. These two types of grain structures  have different magnetic permeability which can cause false indications Or indications may not be visible properly.

RE: [MW:33404] Re: Weld Copper to Stainless Steel 304

Arc Welding is difficult, Brazing is possible. If fact a of copper to stainless joints are Arc Brazed with Silver Brazing filler . BAg 8 as cited by Mr Hegde  is a popular filler metal for such brazing. The most common option for joining  simpler shapes is Friction Welding , example as shown below.

Re: [MW:33399] PWHT exemption in ASME B31.3

Just to add one key point: while approaching for the final cap pass, deliberately increase the pre- heat temp to the maximum acceptable range and apply temper bead techniques, so you can keep the last pass hardness under control.

The above may help to an extent. However, if CVN impact at minus 29 Deg C is applicable. PWHT is only option.

Hi,

For Pno 4 (let say P11 grade ),Achieving hardness and toughness without PWHT is really a challenging task.

Preheat temp and methodology plays a vital role.
Try to use induction heating!

If the impact test at minus 29 C is required, then there is not point in trying without a PWHT.

Yes, for the cap pass , temper bead techniques will help greatly .

In PQR we can do things with lot of care and somehow achieve the required results , but in production each and every joint needs to welded with same care , which may not be easy to do.

Hence, in my opinion going with PWHT is a good option. Check API RP 582, It mandates. ( I presumed API RP 582 will also be applicable)

Dear Experts

As per ASME B31.3 table 331.1.3, for alloy steels, PWHT is exempted if thickness <=16mm based on some conditions.

One of the conditions for exemption is the use of multiple layer welds when nominal thickness is greater than 5mm. Whether this condition is to ensure that weld layers are tempered, so that martensitic structure wont be formed? If so what about the final layer of the weld, which would be still left untempered?

Re: [MW:33399] PWHT exemption in ASME B31.3

Regards,

Dear Experts

As per ASME B31.3 table 331.1.3, for alloy steels, PWHT is exempted if thickness <=16mm based on some conditions.

One of the conditions for exemption is the use of multiple layer welds when nominal thickness is greater than 5mm. Whether this condition is to ensure that weld layers are tempered, so that martensitic structure wont be formed? If so what about the final layer of the weld, which would be still left untempered?

My opinion with experience Copper to SS welding is not compatible
You can braze or vaccine braze with BAg8 or similar  filler

Dear Experts,
Greetings to All

Please support with your inputs to do the groove weld PQR qualification with Temper Bead Welding.
As per the attached figure QW-462.12 (attached below) , I will be preparing the test coupon for the groove weld.Material will be SA 516 Gr. 70 (N) and the plate thickness will be 20 mm.
As per the figure QW-462.12, the first step will be to make the weld beads against the base metal as shown in the figure.
The Second step is to do the First Layer of Tempering Beads.
Question No.1 - What they mean by tempering beads, Welding with 2.5 mm dia electrode + grind layer 50 %
The Third step is to do the Second Layer of Tempering Beads
Question No.2 - This means to do the welding with 3.2 mm dia electrode + grind layer 20 %
