Re: [MW:35350] Cast-iron welding

Dear Mr. Rajan,
Following steps will help to weld Cast iron successfully.
a. Preheat the CI to a min. of 250-300 deg C to avoid cracking tendency using Oxy fuel or LPG torches. Maintain
inter-pass temperature till the welding is complete.
b. For non machinable welding of CI, use LH electrodes like E 7018 , E 8018 C-1 with SMAW process.
c. Use stringer beads and avoid weaving. Use short beads and peening (for each run) to reduce the stresses during welding.
d. For machinable welding, ENi-CI (pure Nickel) or Ni-Fe (Nickel iron) could be used for both Grey and ductile cast iron.
Both also have superior corrosion resistance properties. FCAW process with similar chemistry could be used as an alternative.
e. CI can be welded with SS electrodes like E 308 and E 309 type also effectively.
f.  Any cracks propped up during welding should be removed by grinding and rewelded as mentioned above.
g. Allow the weld and HAZ zone to cool slowly, possibly wrapping it in an insulation blanket like Asbestos cloth or covering
    with dry sand.
h. Use DP check at room temp. to check the final weld quality.

Hope the above details will help you to weld the CI without any defects.

C Sridhar.
