This is a short table to easily check what is needed for each Item:

Under ASME Section IX, it is acceptable to use a WPS qualified with a 2G PQR for production welds 

made in 5G or 6G provided the WPS remains within its qualified essential variable ranges.

You do not need to qualify a separate WPS in 5G or 6G solely because production welding is in those 

  • positions.

However, the welders are to be individually qualified for the production welding positions like 5G and 6G. 

Otherwise, a contractor cannot use them other than in the 2G position. If the welder is qualified in 6G, 

Then he can weld in all positions, including fillets.

My contractors wants to use approved 2G position WPS for production joints which in 5G/6g position other than 2G position and WQT for 6G position. References to ASME. Can we proceed to do that or do we need to use approved WPS in 6G/ALL positions?
