For single V groove not required back chiping if root weld done with TIG process. If SMAW process used for root weld, then back chip need because of penetration and slag issues. Tension and bend tests were performed on the 40 mm plate.  A second welding procedure qualification was performed on a 6 mm plate in 3G position by GTAW and only impact testing was performed. A third welding procedure qualification was performed on a 6 mm plate in 3G position by SMAW and only impact testing was performed. Dear Welding Experts, We have recently completed PQR qualification on a 220 mm thick joint using a combination of SMAW + SAW processes.  Material-SA 5160 GR.70  SMAW deposited thickness: 111 mm(E7018-1) SAW deposited thickness: 109 mm(EH10K) I now need to prepare a WPS for the SMAW process only. Could you please clarify up to what thickness this WPS will be qualified for based on the deposited SMAW thickness? So our max deposit thickness in WPS will be -220X1.33 =292.6 We will not consider the thickness we have deposited by smaw process. Base metal thickness (impact-qualified) you have now : from 6 mm PQRs - 3 mm to 12 mm . 1.   GTAW weld-metal thickness (impact-qualified) you have now : G TAW from the 6 mm coupon (practically ≤12 mm      unless  the PQR deposited 10+ mm). 2.   SMAW weld-metal thickness (impact-qualified) you have now : SMAW from the 6 mm coupon (again, small, not      anywhere  near 200 mm). 3.   What you do not have : any impact-tested PQR that can justify base thickness up to 200 mm or GTAW weld metal      20 mm / SMAW weld metal 200 mm for an impact-required WPS. The 40 mm non-impact PQR cannot be used to      fill that gap.   What you need to do to reach the ranges you want: To qualify the base thickness up to 200 mm for impact toughness 1.   Obtain a PQR with impact testing on a coupon T ≥ 100 mm (As most rules let you qualify up to 2T ).
